	Doxycycline is used for treating infections caused by certain bacteria.

Doxycycline is used for:

Treating a wide variety of infections caused by certain bacteria. It may also be used to prevent or slow the progression of anthrax after exposure. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor, which may not be listed in the professional package insert.

Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by interfering with the production of proteins needed by the bacteria to grow. Slowing bacterial growth allows the body’s defense mechanisms (eg, white blood cells) to destroy them.

Do NOT use Doxycycline if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Doxycycline or another tetracycline
• you are taking acitretin, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or penicillins (eg, amoxicillin)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Doxycycline :

Some medical conditions may interact with Doxycycline. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have diarrhea, a stomach or intestinal infection, or the blood disease porphyria

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Doxycycline. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or penicillinsbecause they may decrease Doxycycline ’s effectiveness
• Acitretin or isotretinoin because side effects, such as increased pressure inside the skull (resulting in severe headaches and vision problems) may occur
• Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), methotrexate, or methoxyflurane because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
• Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Doxycycline

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Doxycycline may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Doxycycline :

Use Doxycycline as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Doxycycline is usually given as an injection at your doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Doxycycline at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Doxycycline. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose.
  Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.
• Do not use Doxycycline if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.
• Doxycycline works best if it is used at the same time each day.
• To clear up your infection completely, use Doxycycline for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.
• If your doctor directs you to switch to medicine that you take by mouth, be sure you understand how to take it.
• If you miss a dose of Doxycycline , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Doxycycline.

Important safety information:

• Be sure to use Doxycycline for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
• Long-term or repeated use of Doxycycline may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
• Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
• Doxycycline may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Doxycycline. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
• Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Doxycycline. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).
• Lab tests may be performed while you use Doxycycline. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Doxycycline should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 8 years old; permanent tooth discoloration (yellow-gray-brown) may occur.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Doxycycline has been shown to cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Doxycycline while you are pregnant. Doxycycline is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while
  taking Doxycycline.

Possible side effects of Doxycycline :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; difficulty swallowing; inflammation of the tongue; loss of appetite; nausea; purple patches under the skin; sensitivity to sunlight; skin inflammation in the anal and genital areas; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bulging soft spots in infants; headache and/or blurred vision; increased pressure in the head; pain, swelling, or redness at injection site; vaginal irritation or discharge; severe reaction to the sun.

What are clarithromycin tablets and extended-release tablets?

CLARITHROMYCIN (Biaxin® or Biaxin® XL) is an antibiotic. Clarithromycin kills certain bacteria or stops their growth. It treats ear, lung, sinus, throat and skin infections. This medicine is also is used to treat a certain bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers. Clarithromycin will not work for colds, flu, or other virus infections. Biaxin® XL is an extended-release form of clarithromycin that only needs to be taken once daily. Generic clarithromycin tablets and extended-release tablets are available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• diarrhea
• irregular heart beat or abnormal heart beat
• kidney disease
• liver disease
• stomach problems (especially colitis)
• other chronic illness
• an unusual or allergic reaction to clarithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

Take clarithromycin tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take the tablets with a full glass of water. You may take clarithromycin regular-release tablets with or without food, but be sure to take the extended-release tablets (Biaxin® XL) with food. Taking clarithromycin with food may reduce stomach upset. Do not crush or chew the Biaxin® XL tablets. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber’s advice.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 6 hours between Biaxin® doses, and at least 12 hours between Biaxin® XL doses.

What drug(s) may interact with clarithromycin?

• astemizole
• birth control pills
• carbamazepine
• cisapride
• colchicine
• digoxin
• dofetilide
• doxercalciferol
• ergot alkaloid medicines, like ergotamine
• other antibiotics, like grepafloxacin or sparfloxacin
• paricalcitol
• pimozide
• ritonavir
• some ’statin’ medicines for reducing cholesterol (examples: atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin)
• terfenadine
• theophylline
• triazolam
• warfarin
• zidovudine

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What side effects may I notice from taking clarithromycin?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

• difficulty breathing
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
• severe or watery diarrhea
• skin rash, itching
• swelling of tongue or throat
• vomiting
• yellow color of eyes, skin, or urine

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

• changes in taste or smell
• headache
• nausea
• stomach pains or cramps

What should I watch for while taking clarithromycin?

Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve in 2 to 3 days. Make sure to take all of this medicine as prescribed, even if you begin to feel better.

Clarithromycin may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Women should use additional forms of birth control during the month they received clarithromycin. Depending on the length of clarithromycin treatment, additional birth control methods may be needed for at least one menstrual cycle after the antibiotic is finished.

If you get severe or watery diarrhea, do not treat yourself. Call your prescriber or health care professional for advice.

If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking clarithromycin.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15° and 30°C (59° and 86°F). Keep container tightly closed. Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

How to use

This medication should be taken with food. The liquid suspension form of this medication must be shaken well before using. To help clear up your infection completely, keep taking this medicine for the full time of treatment , even if you begin to feel better after a few days. If you have a strep infection, you should keep taking this medicine for at least 10 days. This is especially important in strep infections since serious heart or kidney problems could develop later if your infection is not cleared up completely. Also, if you stop taking this medicine too soon, your symptoms may return.This medicine works best when there is a constant amount in the blood or urine. To help keep the amount constant, do not miss any doses. Also, it is best to take the doses at evenly spaced times, day and night . For example, if you are to take four doses a day, the doses should be spaced about 6 hours apart. If this interferes with your sleep or other daily activities, or if you need help in planning the best times to take your medicine, check with your health care professional.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Cefpodoxime is an antibiotic in a class of drugs called cephalosporins. Cefpodoxime fights bacteria in the body. Cefpodoxime is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, ear infections, sinus infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections. Cefpodoxime may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Storage

Store tablets and capsules at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Warnings/Precautions

Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: any allergies (especially to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics), kidney disease, stomach problems, colitis. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection). This drug should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Since small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Possible Side Effects

This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and headache. If they continue or become severe, inform your doctor promptly. Other side effects reported with this medication include anxiety, insomnia and dizziness. Inform your doctor if any of these effects occur. Unlikely to occur but report promptly: fever, easy bleeding or bruising, a change in the amount of urine, seizures. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: difficulty breathing, skin rash, hives, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: dizziness upon standing, fast heartbeat, chest pain, change in the appearance of the eye, eye swelling/redness, fever, joint pain, swollen or tender glands (lymph nodes), swelling in the arms/hands/feet. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
